Research Collaboration

The Department of Civil Engineering has recorded significant progress in research, resulting in the development of original works such as new shear beam finite element models, new resonance techniques for analysis of frames and plates, high strength concretes from local materials, material improvement for foundations and highway construction.

The Department, through the Faculty of Engineering, is currently undertaking a joint collaborative research with the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in the area of improvement of the engineering properties of various local materials from the Niger Delta Region for road construction.

Consultancy Activities

The Civil Engineering Department is noted for providing outstanding consultancy services. The University has benefited from these services in many of her developmental efforts, thus making the Department an esteemed partner of the University consultancy services Unit. Being located in a major industrial centre, the department has enjoyed the patronage of many construction and industrial organizations in and around River State, especially for soils and concrete testing. For an unbroken period of about 18 years till 2004, the Department held a contract with Shell Petroleum Development Company for the Provision of Quality Control and Laboratory Testing Consultancy Services, which ran into millions of naira per year. Also at the inception of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) now Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) the Civil Engineering Department was one of the major Consultants on roads, shore protection and geotechnical investigation projects. Indeed, the department is unique in making enormous and enviable contributions towards the consultancy efforts of the University.

In addition, the Department had organized training programmes for Local Government engineers to upgrade their knowledge and expose them to new skills in project supervision, work measurement and quality control of civil engineering work. Several students of the Department have been proud beneficiaries of this practical exposure.

The Department is intensifying her effort to widen her scope of services in devising new academic programmes, involvement in consultancies and research to meet the new challenges of the environment and industry.

Staff Contribution to Engineering Profession

Departmental staff members have made meaningful contributions to national and international professional bodies and engineering industries. This is evidenced by the high level of professional recognition in terms of fellowships and awards. Two Civil Engineering staff have served as Port Harcourt branch chairmen of the Nigerian Society of engineers, COREN ERM inspectors, Chief rapporteurs at COREN assemblies, chairmen of zonal and national professional committees and members of the national Engineering Council. As mentioned earlier, the department can provide consultancy services on Quality Control and Material Testing as well as structural design, failure analysis and investigation.
