DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Introduction

The Department runs a programme that lead to the award of B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering. The undergraduate programme is designed to provide fundamental knowledge and then deepen the students’ grasp of Mechanical Engineering. It also introduces them to the techniques and tools of research, develops in them the spirit of enquiry and generally prepares them to face challenges and solve problems in the field of Mechanical Engineering.


Programme Philosophy

Mechanical Engineering applies basic scientific principles to the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of all forms of mechanical devices, as well as to the management of the human and material resources necessary for these activities. Courses are therefore offered to impart sound knowledge to students on the art of application of the related principles.

It is believed that in a developing economy, such as the case in Nigeria, a broad based training for engineers is preferable to highly specialized training in narrow fields during the undergraduate training of the engineer. The programme offered is therefore guided by this concept.

Accordingly, the first four of a total training period of five years (the first two of which are common to all branches of Engineering in the Faculty), are devoted to advanced studies in basic science and fundamental engineering concepts such as engineering drawing, applied mechanics, thermo-fluids sciences, materials science, electrical engineering, workshop technology and manufacturing science. Design, a central activity in Mechanical Engineering, features prominently in these years so also are the necessary tools of mathematics, numerical methods and computing. Furthermore, an equivalent of one year industrial work experience, spread over the four years, is provided in this period to develop professionalism and adaptability towards industrial life.

In the 5th year, more advanced courses are offered in applied mechanics, thermo-fluids sciences and control engineering. In addition, at this stage are consolidated the principles of scientific control and use of human and material resources: thus apart from economics which is taught in the 3rd year, elements of industrial engineering and management science are offered in the 5th year. Furthermore an in-depth study of some aspects of mechanical Engineering, in the form of a final year experimental and / or theoretical project, is undertaken by each student.

 Objectives

On successful completion of the programme the graduate Mechanical Engineer shall be able to:

  • Prepare and read Engineering Drawings:
  • Design, manufacture and assemble Engineering components and systems;
  • Solve Engineering problems by analysis and empirical methods;
  • Install, operate, maintain and service plant/machinery, tools and equipment; and
  • Apply management principles to solve management and organization problems related to any set-up
