Mission and Vision

The mission of the petroleum engineering programme is to provide the students with quality education and training in the field of petroleum engineering through effective teaching and research. The undergraduate curriculum in petroleum engineering is designed to equip the student with the fundamentals necessary to achieve a lasting professional growth. Graduates are prepared to enter both the private and public sectors as petroleum engineers or to pursue further education at the graduate level in other universities within and outside Nigeria.

The course takes the student through the fundamentals of petroleum engineering and its industrial application. Students cover core petroleum engineering topics, such as, oil and gas exploration, reservoir engineering, drilling, production engineering, and petroleum geology.

The B.Tech Petroleum Engineering course is also closely integrated with our Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering course. This means that the more general areas of petroleum engineering relating to the process of moving fluids through a production system are covered in chemical engineering topics, such as, transport phenomena, thermodynamics, and petroleum refining technology. Our students on graduation are ready for a career as professional engineers in either the petroleum industry or chemical process industries.

Also, the Petroleum Engineering Programme at the Rivers State University of science and Technology (RSUST) provide technically, strong and well-round academic curriculum designed to prepare its students for challenging careers in the industry and in government. The courses offered in the programme are designed to impart relevant knowledge to its students on the application of the basic and physical sciences of mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, geophysics as well as the various engineering principles for the safe and efficient exploration, development, production, transportation and management of oil and gas resources.

Programme Objectives

The objectives of the programme in Petroleum and Gas Engineering are:

  • To train professional candidates capable of applying engineering principles and practices for the safe and efficient exploration, development, production, transportation and management of petroleum resources.
  • To train engineers who can design processes and machines, manufacture, utilize and maintain oilfield equipment for exploitation of the earth’s petroleum resources in an environmentally safe and efficient manner.
  • To train professionals who will be able to integrate key science and engineering principles to address the technological challenges of the petroleum and natural gas industry.
  • To be able to exercise original thought, have good professional judgment and be able to take responsibility for the direction of important tasks.
  • To be able to manage people, fund, materials and equipment.
  • To improve on indigenous technology to enhance local problems solving capability.

Programme Outcome

On successful completion, a graduate of the programme is expected to be able to:

  • Have competency in mathematics (including calculus, differential equations, probability and statistics)
    • Have competency in the engineering sciences (including fluid mechanics, materials sciences, thermodynamics), as well as in the geo-sciences (including the characterization and evaluation of subsurface geological formations and their resources using geo-scientific and engineering methods)
  • Understand the basic principles underlying the drilling and production of oil and gas (including design and analysis of well systems and procedures for drilling and completing wells, for producing, injecting, and handling fluids).
  • Understanding Petroleum reservoir engineering principles and practices for optimizing resources development and management; as well as the use of economic principles and resource valuation methods for decision making under conditions of risk and uncertainty.
    • Understand implement safety and environmental protection methods for safe oilfield operations.
    • Understand natural gas processing methods including liquefaction, absorption and adsorption.
    • Have competency in the design of equipment for gas processing, transportation and utilization.
    • Our graduates will practice in a broad range of petroleum engineering fields working on teams that create innovative solutions to the most pressing problems of the petroleum and natural gas industry by implementing the ideals of ethical behavior, professionalism, and environmental sensitivity and social awareness.
    • Our graduates will be recognized as critical and independent thinkers and will assume positions of leadership in defining the social, intellectual, business and technical dimensions of the professional organizations they belong to.

Employment and Academic Progression

The petroleum engineering faculty and staff are committed to an interactive teaching and learning environment to ensure that the student is an active participant in the learning process. Practical approach to teaching in the department impacts positively on the employability of our graduates.

Many of our lecturers have several years of oil and gas industry experience. Apart from making the students have sound theoretical knowledge of petroleum engineering courses they impart key practical skills that will make the graduate industry ready and an attractive prospect to employers.
