DEPARTMENT OF PETROCHEMICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Petroleum Engineering runs a programme that lead to the award of B. Tech. in Petroleum Engineering. The undergraduate programme is designed to provide fundamental knowledge and then deepen the students’ grasp of Petroleum Engineering.

It also introduces them to the techniques and tools of research, develops in them the spirit of enquiry and generally prepares them to face challenges and solve problems in the field of Petroleum Engineering.

The Department offers undergraduate and graduate students some of the finest instruction and facilities in West Africa. Our state-of-the-art research and instructional labs are matched only by our team of professors and researchers –recognized as some of the top achievers and scientists in their fields. Our Department and School are located in Port Harcourt being the capital of Rivers State; the treasure base of the nation. Today, more than 600 undergraduate students are building their future and studying with our departments.

The department is instrumental in providing excellence in education and research.

  • Leading Innovation in Energy and the Environment
  • Advancing Health and Wellness

HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME

The Petroleum Engineering Programme was introduced /established in 1995. Like the other seven Departments of the Faculty of Engineering, the Petroleum Engineering Programme runs courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree. Sixteen (16) students were admitted on the first batch in the 1995/1996 session, out of which eight (8) graduated in the 1999/2000 Session.

Presently, the Petroleum Engineering Programme has a total of twenty academic staff. The Petroleum Engineering has (3) three Laboratories namely: Analysis Laboratory, Petroleum General Laboratory, and Petroleum Engineering Laboratory.

There is also a well-equipped Mechanical Engineering Workshop consisting of Machine Shop, Foundry Section, Sheet Metal Section, Wood-Work Section, and Plant Maintenance/Automobile Section. The Workshop is run by 5 Technologists/Senior Technicians and Craftsmen.

PHILOSOPHY

The B.Tech. Programme in Petroleum Engineering is dedicated to the training of highly qualified and competent Petroleum and Gas engineers well grounded in the fundamentals of the course, in theory and practice.

As a consequence, the programme is designed to emphasize the application of the theoretical as well as the practical knowledge of Engineering to the efficient solution of energy exploitation, environmental degradation and resource management.
