Programme Philosophy

The general understanding of values, realities and basic principles of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Programme in the Rivers State University of Science and technology, Port Harcourt, is based on the design of machines; structure, systems, processes for the production, processing, preservation, storage and marketing of food and fibre, as well as the conservation and development of the environment and natural resources. This is in line with the global trend in the Agricultural Engineering profession, which now has nine (9) specialization options to serve humanity better.

These options include Aquacultural Engineering (AQE); Biological Engineering (BE); Ergonomics, Safety and Health Engineering (ESHE); Forestry Engineering (FE); Food and Process Engineering (FPE); Information and Electrical Technology (IET); Power and Machinery (PM); Soil and Water Engineering (SWE); Farm Structures and Environment Engineering (FSEE); and Environmental Engineering(EE).

The B. Tech programme in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering is concerned with the production of qualified Agricultural and Environmental Engineers who are theoretically and practically competent to promote technological/industrial and rural development in this country and elsewhere.

The B. Tech. nomenclature resulted from the need to give the degree a more practical orientation than is usual with the traditional universities. The programme is designed to emphasize the application of the theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering to the solution of agricultural, environmental, and rural developmental problems.

VISION

The vision is to produce high level trained engineers for enhanced agricultural production, food security, environmental protection, and poverty alleviation in Nigeria by the year 2020 and make Nigeria industrialized by the year 2030.

MISSION

This the department is doing through teaching and research by using prescribed programmes, workshops and laboratories. It is expected that the Department with its qualified lecturers, standard workshops and laboratories will be able to produce Agricultural and Environmental Engineering experts at all levels that are able to carry out research and development work at the cutting edge of engineering and technology, to project the country through the information technology and jet ages.

The B. Tech programme runs for a duration of five years in which candidates receive lectures, tutorials, laboratory/workshop and field work. The practical and industrial components of the programme are reinforced by 12 months of industrial attachment at three levels. In the fifth and final year, an in-depth study of some aspects of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering is undertaken by each student in the form of a final year project.
